In a desperate attempt to short circuit the parliamentary investigation into his financial dealings, member of parliament Nigel Farage has resigned from the chamber and triggered a by-election (special election) that he plans to stand in. Farage’s speech tried to frame this by-election as the people vs. the establishment. But it’s impossible to argue that novelty candidate Count Binface is the establishment Reform is fighting against.
The Reform Party’s leader wanted to make this by-election, that he unnecessarily triggered, about his fight against the political establishment. But the other major party’s in the country quickly recognized this as a tax-payer funded publicity stunt designed to drum up media attention and announced they would not have candidates contest Farage for the seat. Which means that the only other candidate with any kind of name recognition is novelty candidate, Count Binface.
Farage’s resignation from his seat is an attempt to circumvent the investigative process that Westminster holds all of its MPs to when there are credible accusations of financial impropriety. His hope was that if he crushed the other parties in a by-election that he called, he’d be able to make the public argument that the people had already decided these allegations weren’t worth booting him from Parliament. This resignation not only triggered a by-election, it’s paused the Parliamentary investigations into these financial issues because he’s no longer a member.
This decision by the other party’s has denied Farage the fight that he wanted, which was the main reason that they collectively decided not to contest this by-election. It also means that these parties are able to conserve resources for the campaign that is expected after the investigations into the millionaire are completed.
While there are local independents and parties that have already announced their attention to contest the election, Count Binface is the most serious competition that Farage will face when the voters go to the polls. That means that the former City trader who gets personal multi-million pound gifts from billionaires is now going up against a man who wears a garbage bin on his head. In order to not be embarrassed, he has to convince the nearly 54% of people that voted against him in 2024 to either stay at home or vote for him in this by-election.

How did we get here?
The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards is investigating a £5 million gift from a Thai based crypto billionaire and financial gifts from convicted fraudster George Cottrell in 2024 that were undeclared as is required under the rules for Parliament. If this investigation results in a suspension that’s longer than 10 days, a recall petition is sent to the constituency – in this case Clacton by the sea – and if 10% (or more) of the voters sign this petition the MP is booted from parliament and a by-election is called.
Under parliamentary rules, members of parliament do not have to declare personal gifts which is what Farage has claimed the £5 million was. If this gift was truly a private gift, the investigation would prove that and there would be no suspension or by-election.
The major reason for his decision to resign when he did was because the story was about to drop that the banks involved in the gifts had flagged it for investigation as potential money laundering. His office had been given the Guardian a timeline for a comment in response to their pending story, and instead he announced his resignation from Parliament. As a result of the news cycle that been kicked up in the aftermath, this story has been buried from the public consciousness.
But the bottom line is that this is the first time that the media has truly scrutinized Farage in his nearly 20 year political career, dating back to his founding of the UK Independence Party (UKIP). Even as he campaigned to for the country to leave the European Union back in 2016, he never received any where near this level of investigative reporting.
And the reasons for this increased scrutiny is that his Reform Party has consistently polled above Labor and the Conservative parties over the last year. That means that Farage is positioned to become the next prime minister at the next general election; and since he’s now a serious threat to lead the country, the press is finally doing its due diligence.
Who is Count Binface?
Count Binface is an intergalactic space warrior from Sigma IX that occasionally interrupts his very busy schedule of invading other planets to contest elections in the UK. The Recyclon has contested elections against (then) sitting prime minister Borris Johnson, and Rishi Sunak; along with the 2021 and 2024 Mayoral elections, and the Makersfield by-election back in June, 2026. His manifesto (platform) includes (but is not limited to) nationalizing model railroads and Adele, capping the price of 99 Flake ice cream at 99 pence, and building at least one affordable house.
The Count crowd funds money to pay for his more expensive election fees and donates any money raised over the fee to charity.
In reality, the man behind the mask is comedian John Harvey. Harvey initially rocketed to internet fame when he contested Theresea May’s seat in the 2017 general election as the character Lord Buckethead. However, Lord Buckethead is a copyrighted character from a 1980’s Star Wars spoof and Harvey was forced to redesign his novelty candidate; which is how we ended up with the newest British national treasure, Count Binface.
Novelty candidates, like Binface, are a frequent site in British Parliamentary elections due to the inexpensive cost it takes to register for the race. For only £500 you get to stand on stage with the other candidates on election night as the results are ready out. Which has lead to incredible photos like this one from Andy Burnham’s victory in the Makerfield by-election.

Some of these novelty candidates take the plunge to make a serious point about issues impacting life in the United Kingdom. While others, like Count Binface, exist to highlight the realities of the country’s political system.
And there’s no better way for the Count to highlight the farcical nature of UK politics, than to humiliate Farage during the “people vs. the establishment” by-election.
