Who is Neeru Khosla, the new Seahawks owner

It was announced on Saturday that Jody Allen had reached a deal with the Khosla family, including venture capitalist Vinod Khosla (71), on behalf of her late brother Paul Allen’s estate. The deal is for an eye watering $9.612 billion which will distributed among charities determined by the estate.

The $9.612 billion is an NFL record and dwarfs the recent sale of the Washington Commanders for $6.052 billion a few years ago. According to a memo that was sent out to NFL owners by the league, Neeru Khosla (69) will be the controlling owner while Neal Khosla (33) would have a significant leadership role. Neeru’s husband Vinod Khosla indicated on social media that he was excited to see the proceeds from the sale distributed to a non-profit.

Under NFL rules, the controlling owner must own a minimum of 30% of the franchise. That means that Neeru is putting up a significant chunk of the sale price.

For this deal to go through, the family will have to sale their minority stake of the San Francisco 49ers.

Neeru received her masters in molecular biology from San Jose State University and her undergraduate degree from Dehli University. The microbiologist would also attend Stanford University in order to earn her second masters degree, this time in education. It was this interest in education that led to her co-founding the CK-12 Foundation which provides free, and customizable, education materials for K-12 students with help from AI. The intent behind founding CK-12 in 2006 was because she was concerned about the failures of the one size fits all solution that we currently see in public education.

Unlike static content, we created products that meet students where they are, develop a holistic understanding of the gaps and opportunities in their learning curve, and provide customized solutions for their needs, whether they need to catch up or move ahead. Her dedication to the student-centric approach to education came as a result of a brief time that she lived in London as a child. It was in contrast to the rigid approach that the education system in India used, which she believes impacts the students potential success. When she returned to school for her masters degree in education from Stanford, it further exposed her to the struggles educators have in meeting the needs of their students. Because her grandparents and parents had hammered home their belief that education is the best pathway out of limited circumstances and she wanted to help improve the odds students have in achieving educational success.

Neeru met her now husband Vinod when they were 16 in India, they married in 1980 shortly after they moved to the United States. They have four children together, one of them is Neal who will be involved in the operations of the Seahawks.

The NFL owners will meet in August to ratify the deal and approve the sale.
