On Tuesday, August 4th, the Tacoma City Council unanimously approved a letter of agreement to the contract bargaining agreement (CBA) that included a reduction in force (RIF) in the ambulance billing unit of four positions.
The work done by the four full time employees will be subcontracted out to save the city money. IBEW Local 483’s customer and field service unit was involved in the negotiations with regards to the RIF. Tacoma’s Public Utility board voted to approve the letter of agreement prior to the council’s vote on Tuesday.
These employees will be offered a voluntary demotion to customer service positions with Tacoma Public Utilities. If the employees accept the voluntary demotion they will forfit a formal layoff along with their right to be reemployed the at their prior classification (employment level) and they’ll be required to complete the 12 week Customer Service new hire training. At that point, the employees would need to meet the expectations as required for their new role.
